The University of North Texas is the choice of more than 36,000 students and is a student-centered public research university. As one of Texas' largest universities, UNT offers 97 bachelor's, 101 master's and 49 doctoral degree programs, many nationally and internationally recognized. The university has outstanding faculty members and offers a 20:1 student-faculty ratio (although class sizes vary, especially for freshmen).

Our students compete well nationally, winning scholarships and prestigious graduate fellowships. For example, in 2007, UNT was one of only seven universities in the nation with the maximum number of Goldwater Scholars in math and science.

An act of the 27th Legislature in 1901 founded the Girls Industrial College, the school that would become Texas Woman's University in 1957. The school had then and has now a dual mission: to provide a liberal education and to prepare young women "for the practical industries of the age" with a specialized education.

TWU today offers a comprehensive catalog of academic studies, including baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees. Now in its tenth decade, the University has grown from a
small college to a major university. TWU is the largest university primarily for women in the United States.

Denton has long been known for its prominent universities, UNT and TWU, and the schools' former students, including Dr. Phil McGraw, Mean Joe Greene, and Norah Jones. This national perception of Denton has changed, and is now more focused on the music scene that has produced Norah Jones, Brave Combo, the Eli Young Band and others.

The New York Times has picked up on this shift and is now calling Denton as the "next Austin" of the indie music scene.
